Training sessions

We hold several sessions during the week open for all members to attend and participate.  Our coaching panel designs programs of on and off the water training which cater for (targeted) fitness levels, current paddling activities and the racing events calendar.

Our broadwater, ocean and marathon training is situated behind the Aquatic Centre on the ramp facing the Broadwater and where our regular weekly sessions occur. Our sprint lake training location and Club HQ is located at Coomera Lake.

‘Come & Try’ sessions for adults are also undertaken from behind the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre – Most Sunday mornings (need to book a seat)

The weekly training schedule is announced and managed via Events on our Facebook members pages. Non-members wishing to train will have to make arrangements with the Head Coach for their addition to training sessions. We encourage members to participate in their own additional training to achieve the fitness required for their competitive paddling levels.

Basic Technique

Basic technique and the roles in a canoe are relevant to all paddlers.

Regattas and key events

Regattas for our zone (Southern Queensland) are held mostly on Saturdays and/or Sundays. A list of upcoming regattas can be obtained from www.aocra.com.au on the SQ Zone page. In addition to these races, the club may participate in regattas hosted by other clubs, and events on the national calendar including:

– the Australian OC1/2 national titles in sprint and marathon – seniors and juniors

– the Australian OC6 national titles in sprint and marathon – seniors and juniors.

We will plan each year to compete in selected international level events depending on crew availability and the racing calendar. Events may include the Takapuna Cup in New Zealand, the Sydney Harbour Challenge, the Great Barrier Reef Challenge, Vaka Eiva in the Cook Islands, the Singapore Cup, Queen Liliuokalani in Hawaii and/or the World Marathon and Sprint titles.

Crew selections

In a competitive club which values paddler attitudes and fitness and skill, the on-water coaching panel will select crews based on a number of factors including:

  • maximising racing experience and development of all club paddlers
  • your fitness and skill level
  • attendance, attitude and effort in training
  • racing conditions, crew balance and leadership
  • fielding competitive crews in key zone, national and targeted events
