About Us

In the Beginning

Gold Coast Outrigger Canoe Club was formed in December 2013 by two paddling families; the Paine’s and the Davis’s. Headed by enthusiasts Leigh Paine and Tony Davis, this club has grown the membership thru Junior Development and Novice Programs. Their coaching has produced teams of experienced competitors competing at Zone, National and World Titles.
The Gold Coast Outrigger Canoe Club is the sister of the Cradle Coast Outrigger Canoe Club whish was formed in Burnie, Tasmania by Leigh and Linda Paine in 2006. Both clubs look forward to a long and prosperous relationship working together, hosting events and growing the sport in both regions.

Origins of Outrigging

Outrigging has been around for the last 30,000 years throughout the Pacific Rim. Our Polynesian ancestors used outrigging for migration and transportation purposes. In 1908, outrigging was established as a club sport in Hawaiian Islands with canoe racing for men only following soon after. Since then, the first Australian outrigger club was formed in 1978 on the Gold Coast.
Outrigging cultivates a respect for the ocean and its elements as well as for our paddlers and canoes. We protect and preserve the spirit and culture of this sport.
